How to Create Open Space in Padel: Lob, Middle Volley, Drop Shot

Players spend whole matches hunting for a gap that is not there. Against a pair that holds its shape, the court genuinely is covered, and hitting harder at a covered court just produces errors.

Space in padel is not found. It is manufactured. Three shots do it, and each one opens a different part of the court.

A well-positioned pair has no gaps. So you have to make one.

1. The lob opens the space in front of them

A good lob pushes both opponents backwards. They have to retreat to deal with it, and the moment they do, the front of their court is empty.

That is your opening. The lob is not only a defensive reset, it is the most reliable way to create space at the net.

Lob them back and the front opens up.

2. The middle volley opens the corners

Play a volley into the middle and both opponents converge towards it. It is the ball neither of them owns, so they both drift in.

The instant they do, both corners are exposed. You did not aim at a corner, you made them abandon one.

Middle volley pulls them in. Now the corners are yours.

3. The drop shot opens the space behind them

The drop shot does the opposite of the lob. It drags them forward, and once they have committed, everything behind them is available.

It also works on their heads. A pair that has been dropped on once starts leaning forward, which makes the next lob far more effective.

Drop them forward and the back opens.

Open first, then hit into it

Notice that none of the three is the point-winning shot. Each one is the ball before it. Their job is to move somebody, and the next ball collects.

Stop looking for the gap. Pick which one you want to exist, play the shot that creates it, and be ready for the ball after.
