Make Them Move: Why Movement Beats Power in Padel
Amateur players try to win points by hitting a shot their opponent cannot reach. It works occasionally and misses often, and the misses are yours.
There is a lower risk way to win the same points. Stop trying to beat them with one ball and start making them run. Errors follow movement, and they cost you nothing to produce.
Every ball adds distance
Play one ball to a side and they cover a couple of metres. Nothing dramatic, nothing that looks like an attack.
But the metres accumulate. A rally where you keep changing their position is quietly doing damage even when no single shot looks threatening.
A moving player hits a worse ball
This is the part that matters more than fatigue. A player who is still travelling cannot set their feet, cannot turn properly, and cannot control depth.
So the longer you keep them moving, the worse the balls coming back get. You are not waiting for them to get tired, you are degrading every shot they play.
Eventually they make the mistake
Keep it up and the error arrives. Not because you found a winner, but because you asked them to solve the same problem one more time than they could.
The point cost you nothing. No fine margins, no low percentage line, no risk of donating it back.
Count metres, not winners
Next match, change what you are keeping score of. Instead of asking whether you hit anything impressive, ask how far you made them run.
Move them side to side and front to back. The winners will show up on their own, from balls so weak you barely have to try.
