How to Block a Bajada in Padel: Move Closer to the Net

You lobbed them, they let it come off the back wall, and now they are winding up for the bajada. The natural instinct at that moment is to back away from the net and brace.

That instinct costs you the point. Where you stand while they hit decides how much court they have to aim at, and backing off gives them all of it.

You lobbed, they took it off the glass. Now you have to block the bajada.

Do not drift back from the net

Standing around three metres from the net feels safer. More time to see it, more room to react.

But you have not bought time. The ball is coming fast either way. All you have done is change the geometry of what you are defending.

Three metres back. It feels safe. It is not.

Standing back makes their court bigger

Angles open up with distance. From further back, the same swing from your opponent can find lines on either side of you that simply were not available before.

You made yourself a smaller obstacle in a wider gap. That is the entire problem in one sentence.

Further back, wider angles. You opened the court for them.

Step in to about two metres

Move towards the net instead, to roughly two metres. Yes, it feels like walking into the shot. Do it anyway.

Closer to the net you occupy more of their available window. The lines that were open a metre ago are now covered by your body and racket.

Two metres. Closer feels wrong and works better.

Smaller court, more blocks

Their target shrinks, so more of their bajadas end up hitting you rather than passing you. And a block does not need to be pretty. It just needs to go back over.

You are not trying to win the point off a bajada. You are trying to still be in the rally, at the net, when it is over.

Come closer when blocking a bajada. Every time.

Test it on the court
