Why You Should Play More to the Middle in Padel: 4 Reasons

Beginners aim for the corners. It feels like the winning shot, it looks impressive, and it is where the space appears to be.

Better players do something duller. They keep putting the ball down the middle. It is not a lack of ambition. The middle is simply the highest percentage target on a padel court, and there are four separate reasons why.

1. It is the biggest gap they have

Two defenders standing in their normal positions leave roughly four metres of court between them. Nothing else on the court is that wide and that empty.

The corners look open, but each defender is already standing near one. The middle is the only large space nobody is actually covering.

2. Neither of them knows whose ball it is

A ball down the middle belongs to both players, which in practice means it belongs to neither. Both hesitate for a moment, or both go for it and get in each other's way.

You are not just hitting into space. You are making two people answer a question they have to answer together, at speed, without talking.

3. It cannot go out off the side walls

Aim near a side wall and you are risking a ball that flies out or sits up off the glass. The margin is thin, and the punishment for missing it is losing the point outright.

Down the middle there is no side wall to catch. The shot is simply safer, which means you can hit it more often and with more conviction.

4. The net is lowest in the middle

The net sags. It is about 92cm at the posts and about 88cm in the centre. A few centimetres does not sound like much until you realise it applies to every single ball you hit.

Playing the middle means clearing the lowest part of the net every time. More margin, for free, on the shot you were already going to hit.

Aim there more often than feels right

Biggest gap, most confusion, no side wall risk, lowest net. Four independent reasons pointing at the same target.

The middle will never feel like the exciting shot. That is fine. Play it more often than your instincts suggest and watch how many more balls come back weak.
