Do Not Defend From the Service Line in Padel

When a pair loses the net, they often stop halfway. Not committed forward, not properly back, just parked around the service line waiting to see what happens.

It is the worst position on the court, and it is worth understanding exactly why rather than just being told to move.

Stuck on the service line. Too far back to attack, too far forward to defend.

They play at your feet

Standing there, you are close enough that any downward ball reaches you fast, but not close enough to volley it as an attack.

So every ball arrives around your shoelaces. You are hitting up, from a standing start, to opponents who are above the net.

Every ball at your feet, and no way to answer it.

Drop back to a real defensive position

Go properly back. Not a step, not a shuffle. Take up a position where the back glass is genuinely behind you and usable.

It feels like conceding ground. You are actually collecting the tools that make defending possible.

Properly back. Now the wall is an asset.

Now you can take it before or after the wall

From deep you get a genuine choice on every ball. Take it early before the bounce off the glass, or let it come off the wall and play it after.

That choice is the whole point of defending from the back. On the service line you have no options at all, only reactions.

Before the wall or after it. Both are available now.

Pick a side of the line

Mid-court is a place you pass through, never a place you wait. Either you have earned the net and you are going forward, or you have not and you are going back.

Standing on the service line is not a compromise between the two. It is the drawbacks of both.

Test it on the court

Reading is step one. Now make these choices under pressure. Solve the interactive puzzles this lesson comes from:
