Do Not Turn Your Back When Returning a Lob in Padel

This is the single most common footwork mistake in padel defense, and it happens before the ball has even reached you.

A lob goes over your head, you turn to face the back wall, and you chase the ball backwards. From there almost nothing good is possible, and it has nothing to do with how fast you are.

Do not face the back wall

Turning square to the back wall means running away from the court with your back to your opponents. You cannot see them, you cannot see the net, and you are hitting blind.

It also means the ball ends up directly behind you rather than beside you, which is the position with the least possible control.

And do not end up behind the ball

Standing directly behind the ball leaves no room to swing. The ball is between you and the target, and your body is in its own way.

Whatever you produce from there is a scoop or a block. You have surrendered the shot before contact.

Turn to face the side wall

Turn sideways instead, facing the side wall, and travel back that way. Your shoulders are now lined up along the direction you want to hit.

You keep the court in your peripheral vision the whole way, so you know where everybody is when you arrive.

Stay beside the ball, not behind it

Track the ball so it ends up to the side of you rather than behind you. That gap is your swing.

From there a proper lob back is genuinely available, and a good lob resets the whole point instead of just surviving it.
