Volley Deep, Not Short: Where to Place Your Volley in Padel

You won the net, you are standing where you want to be, and then two shots later you are back on the baseline wondering what happened.

Usually it was one soft volley. Not an error, not a bad contact, just a ball that landed too short. Depth is what keeps the net, and it is the thing most players stop thinking about once they get there.

The short volley lands where they want it

A volley that drops in the transition zone looks harmless. It is in, it is low, it did not go out.

But it lands exactly where your opponent wants to be standing. It invites them off the back wall and into the court, moving forwards, meeting the ball comfortably in front of them.

So they step in and take the net off you

A player moving forwards onto a short ball is a player in attack. They can play at your feet, they can pass you, and they arrive at the net while doing it.

You did not lose the net to a great shot. You handed it over with a volley that was simply not deep enough.

Deep and sliced, near the back glass

Aim for the ball to die near their back glass. Slice helps here: it keeps the ball low and makes the bounce awkward off the wall rather than a clean, playable rebound.

You do not need power. A deep sliced volley is not trying to win the point outright, it is trying to make sure their next shot is played from the worst place on the court.

And you keep the net

Pinned at the back, their realistic options shrink to a lob or a defensive ball. Both of those you are standing in the right place to answer.

That is the whole trade. Depth is not the exciting part of volleying, but it is the difference between owning the net for one shot and owning it for the whole point.
