Do Not Go Forward Too Early in Padel: Respect the Defense Area

Being stuck at the back is uncomfortable, so the instinct is to fix it as fast as possible. You edge forward, looking for the moment to escape.

That impatience is the single most common mistake in padel defense. The defense area is not a punishment you have to escape. It is the place where you have the most tools, and stepping out of it early gives every one of them away.

Both teams have an area, and both should stay in it

Attackers hold the offense area near the net. Defenders hold the defense area near the back. When both pairs respect their zone, the rally is stable and neither side is handing anything over.

Your job in defense is not to get out as quickly as possible. It is to stay solid until something actually changes.

From your area you can reach everything

Standing properly back, a short volley is still reachable. You have the time to read it and step forward onto it deliberately.

And when they volley deep, you have the back glass behind you. The wall turns a difficult ball into a playable one, but only if you left yourself room to use it.

Step out early and the ball goes to your feet

Now drift forward before you have earned it. You are standing in the middle of the court, and the first thing a decent attacker does is play at your feet.

There is no good answer from there. The ball is below the net, you are moving forwards, and you are hitting up to people standing above you.

And the glass is now too far behind you

The second cost is quieter but just as expensive. By moving up, you left the back wall behind you.

A deep ball that would have rebounded nicely off the glass now dies behind you, or forces an awkward stretched return that becomes their easy attacking ball. You did not just lose position. You lost the wall.
